Description
What
Reiki is a type of energy healing that came from Japan in the early 20th century. Like many energy healing modalities, it is a practice based on the idea that we have an unseen “life force energy” that is flowing through our bodies. The aim of a session is to help reduce stress and encourage healing by promoting a healthy flow of energy.
“Reiki” means “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign” and comes from the Japanese words “rei” (universal) and “ki” (life energy). Through the lens of Reiki, emotional pain or physical illness can be due to energy blocks or where the energy is stagnating.
It is best to do Reiki in a peaceful setting but it can be done anywhere. The patient will sit fully clothed on a chair or they can lie down on a table. The Reiki practitioner then places their hands lightly over different areas on the head, limbs, and torso while using different hand shapes. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body.
Reiki is said to help with relaxation and assist the body’s healing processes naturally. It can be done to help with a variety of physical and emotional issues. People go to Reiki for problems like:
-insomnia
-depression
-pain
-anxiety
There are plenty of studies showing how Reiki can be beneficial for reducing stress and anxiety as well as improving overall well-being.
One study that was published found college students who went through six thirty-minute Reiki
sessions reported they had greater improvements in stress, anxiety, sleep, and depression (https://www.hindawi.com/journals/ecam/2011/381862/).
Another study showed that Reiki and other types of energy therapy could help patients with
cancer, improve pain control, and anxiety. Although it is not a treatment for cancer it has been shown to reduce stress, and promote a sense of relaxation as a complementary treatment.
